Beyond the core mechanics that have captivated millions of gamers worldwide, League of Legends boasts the richest catalog of cosmetic items among the most popular titles, particularly skins. From subtle texture improvements to complete character overhauls, skins have become an integral part of the experience. So, how many skins are there in League of Legends and in what ways do they influence gameplay aesthetics and player satisfaction?

How many skins are in League of Legends?

The number of skins in League of Legends is staggering when compared to other similar games. With each passing year, Riot Games introduces new champions and an even greater number of skins to accompany them.

While the exact count fluctuates as new skins are released and older ones become unavailable, it's safe to say that there are over 1600 skins available in 2024.

According to the League of Legends Wiki, there are exactly 1698 skins as of July 2024. Other sources suggest that the number may be closer to 2000 but this probably includes Chromas and other exclusives.

Overall, saying exactly how many skins are in League of Legends is pointless as the number will probably be higher a week or two from the time of writing.

What Skin Tiers are there in League of Legends?

While affordable skins that cost as low as 390 RP exist, the regular skin tiers with noticeable design tweaks start from 750 RP and reach as high as 3250 RP. Let's look at the main categories.

Ultimate Skins

Ultimate skins offer an unparalleled level of detail, featuring completely revamped models, animations, voice lines, and even unique gameplay mechanics. They represent the highest price point and are considered to be the most prestigious skins in the game, although some of the more recent entries may have been slightly disappointing.

The cheapest Ultimate skin is Gun Goddess Miss Fortune (2275) while all others from this tier cost 3250 RP.

Legendary Skins

Legendary skins are a step below Ultimate skins but still offer significant visual and audio overhauls. They typically feature new animations and voice lines, giving champions a distinct new personality. Legendary skins often come with unique recall animations and other special effects. All skins from this tier cost 1820 RP each.

Mythic Skins

Introduced relatively recently, Mythic skins are a high-tier cosmetic that combines elements of both Legendary and Ultimate skins. You could even say that this tier is right below the Ultimate group. They often feature evolving visual effects based on gameplay performance.

Mythic skins are typically available for short periods of time and get released as part of unique collections. These are only available with Gemstones or with Mythic essence, which can be obtained through the regular events in the game.

Prestige Skins

Since this tier was announced during Worlds 2018, Riot has released dozens of Prestige skins that stand out with their enhanced colors and visuals. This tier is typically considered a step above Epic skins in terms of quality and rarity. These skins provide a noticeable visual upgrade while maintaining the core theme of the original skin.

Mythic skins have limited availability and can only be obtained through events, looting chests, or with Mythic essence. We should also point out the most recent expansion of this tier as Riot already released several skins from their new Prestige Edition 2.0. These upgraded skins offer an even more enhanced color palette and visuals.

Epic Skins

Epic skins offer a substantial visual upgrade to a champion, providing a noticeable departure from the base skin. While they don't reach the level of detail and innovation found in Legendary or Ultimate skins, they still offer a significant enhancement to the champion's appearance.

You can expect higher-quality textures and some new animations, as well was enhanced visual effects. This tier typically costs 1350 RP per skin, which puts it in the middle price range among the traditional lines. This is a good option for players who do not want to overspend but appreciate a more refined look for their favorite champion.

Legacy Skins

Legacy skins are a unique category of skins that are no longer available for direct purchase through the regular in-game store.

These skins were released at specific times, often tied to events or holidays, and were subsequently vaulted, meaning they could no longer be obtained through standard means.

Nowadays, such may appear during limited events or be obtained through opening Hextech chests.

Standard, Deluxe & and Cheaper Skins

When it comes to the most affordable options, the cheapest skins start from just 390 RP. Essentially, these skins offer no extras but your champion with a different outfit or a thematic design.

The more noticeable upgrades start with the Deluxe tier, which has a price tag of 750 RP per skin. These budget-friendly skins include basic visual alterations and improved models within a certain theme but never feature any major improvements.

The next category is where things get spicier - Standard skins which cost 975 RP. In rare cases, skins from this tier feature new animations and effects but mostly, you can expect better texture and more elaborate designs.

Chroma Skins

Chroma skins are essentially recolors of existing skins. They offer players the ability to customize their favorite skins with different color palettes without altering the core visual design.

Chroma skins are generally less expensive than full skin purchases and provide a quick and easy way to personalize a champion's appearance.

Most releases these days include several additional chromas to the new skin design that can be purchased as an extra. If we count the Chromas, it really changes the answer to the original question regarding how many skins are in League of Legends.

Victorious Skins

Victorious skins are special because they are awarded based on your performance throughout the Ranked season. In the past, players had to end the season in Gold or higher to earn the seasonal Victorious skin.

Since the 2023 season, Riot Games introduced a new system that makes it easier for players to win that skin. Moreover, with the introduction of the Split format, there is a Victorious skin for each part of the season.

Players from the lower divisions (below Gold) now can be eligible for the reward by collecting over 1000 Split Points, essentially by just playing Ranked games. However, you also have to reach Honor Level 2 or your points mean nothing.

As for players from Gold or higher, they need only 80 points to be eligible for the Victorious skin.

Conclusion

How many skins are in League of Legends is not as important as the fact that there is no other game developer that works as hard to please its community. There are other tiers outside the regular ones we listed like the exclusive Championship skins or the brand new Transcendent line that has a single entry - Faker's $500 skin.

And the best part is that Riot releases new skins every month, often bi-weekly. Even if none of the existing skins of your favorite champion satisfy you, there is a good chance that there is a new better one in production already.

If your curious to find how much your account worth there is a cool application that tells how much value an account has based on their ingame content such as skins, the application is lolvalue.
