Jayce is one of those champions that looks easy to deal with on paper but melts you in lane. He swaps between hammer (melee) and cannon (ranged) forms with a single button, which means he can poke you from far away and then jump in for a stun if you walk up. His level 2 power spike is one of the strongest in the game.

But Jayce has clear weaknesses. He is squishy. He has no real escape outside of one short dash. And if you can survive his level 2 and 3 windows, he falls off into mid game. This guide covers the best counters to Jayce in both top and mid lane, plus jungle picks that punish him hard.

Quick Counter Picks

  • Top: Wukong, Xin Zhao, Sion, Olaf, Irelia
  • Mid (if Jayce mid): Vel'Koz, Diana, Quinn, Akshan, Sion
  • Junglers that punish top Jayce: Rengar, Fiddlesticks, Lee Sin

If you only remember one pick: Wukong top or Vel'Koz mid. Both have answers to Jayce's range game.

Why Jayce Is Strong

Three things make Jayce dangerous.

First, his form swap. His Q is two different abilities depending on his stance. Cannon Q (Shock Blast) is a long-range poke. Hammer Q (To the Skies) is a gap-closing jump. He can poke you from far, then jump in if you commit to a fight.

Second, his level 2 and level 6 power spikes are massive. At level 2, he unlocks a second form ability and can chunk you for 50% HP. At level 6, his ult gives him bonus stats based on the current form. Cannon ult gives him range. Hammer ult gives him armor and magic resist.

Third, his Acceleration Gate (E in cannon form) speeds up his Q to fire faster, which lets him poke from massive range. Combined with his W passive (Lightning Field) for mana sustain, he can spam abilities all game.

The catch? Jayce has no escape outside of one short hammer-Q jump. He is squishy, his abilities have long cooldowns, and he loses every short trade to melee bruisers.

Best Top Lane Counters

Wukong

Wukong.jpg

Wukong's W (Warrior Trickster) creates a clone he can use to dodge Jayce's poke and reposition. His passive armor stacks reduce Jayce's damage in extended trades. At 6, Wukong's ult knocks Jayce up multiple times and kills him.

How to play it: Trade with Q passive auto reset. Use W to dodge cannon Q poke. At 6, all-in with R from a bush.

Xin Zhao

XinZhao_0.jpg

Xin Zhao's E gap-closes and knocks up Jayce. His Q is a 3-hit auto reset that shreds Jayce's squishy HP pool. His ult lets him isolate Jayce in a 1v1.

How to play it: All-in level 3. Xin Zhao wins every melee trade once he reaches Jayce.

Sion

Sion.jpg

Sion is a tank stat-check. Jayce's poke does relatively little against high armor stacks, and Sion's passive (Glory in Death) lets him keep fighting for several seconds after death. His Q is a long-stun knockup, his W shield blocks poke, and his E slows Jayce so he cannot kite.

How to play it: Build full tank. Stack passive on minions. Q stun and use W shield to absorb Jayce's poke.

Olaf

Olaf_0.jpg

Olaf's ult, Ragnarok, makes him immune to all CC. He just walks at Jayce and kills him. His passive lifesteal at low HP makes him hard to finish off.

How to play it: All-in level 3 with axe. Use ult before engaging at 6 to ignore Jayce's stun.

Irelia

Irelia_0.jpg

Irelia's passive auto-attack speed plus her Q dash-resets let her stick to Jayce and avoid his cannon poke. Once she gets one Q reset, she can chain dashes and shred him.

How to play it: Save Q for minion resets. Engage with E stun when Jayce is in hammer form. Always have an out via minion.

Best Mid Lane Counters

Jayce mid pops up sometimes when teams want flex picks. Here are the best answers.

Vel'Koz

Velkoz_0.jpg

Vel'Koz outranges Jayce's cannon form. His full Q-W-E poke deals massive damage from outside Jayce's reach. His ult finishes Jayce from across the map.

How to play it: Stay max range. Poke with E followed by Q-W. Take Manaflow Band for sustain.

Diana

Diana_0.jpg

Diana scales hard and her R is a gap-closer that pulls Jayce in. Her shield (W) blocks Jayce's poke.

How to play it: Farm safely until 6. Then all-in with R-Q-passive combo.

Quinn

Quinn_0.jpg

Quinn's E (Vault) hops over Jayce and chunks his health. Her ult lets her roam globally and shut down Jayce's split push.

How to play it: Trade with E hops. Take teleport and roam at 6.

Akshan

Akshan_0.jpg

Akshan's E (Heroic Swing) lets him swing around terrain, dodging Jayce's poke entirely. His passive shield gives him sustain in trades.

How to play it: Use terrain to your advantage. Swing around walls to dodge Jayce's cannon Q.

Sion

Same as top lane. Tank stats counter Jayce's range game.

Best Jungle Counters That Punish Top Jayce

Rengar

Rengar_0.jpg

Rengar one-shots squishy mid game champions, and Jayce is exactly that. From a bush, Rengar's empowered Q does massive damage. Jayce's only response is to flash, and after that he is dead.

How to play it: Ward Jayce's lane bushes. Wait for Jayce to push too far, then drop on him from a bush at level 6.

Fiddlesticks

Fiddlesticks_0.jpg

Fiddlesticks's ult fears Jayce in place, which cancels his combo entirely. Combined with Fiddle's W drain, Jayce dies before he can react.

How to play it: Ult from a bush or jungle camp. Drain through Jayce's HP before he can flash.

Lee Sin

LeeSin_0.jpg

Lee Sin ganks before Jayce hits level 2. Early Lee Sin ganks shut down Jayce's snowball before it starts.

How to play it: Gank top at level 3. Q-flash insec into your top laner for an easy first blood.

How to Beat Jayce in Lane

Jayce's biggest weakness is his short cooldowns being burned on poke. Bait his abilities, then engage.

Hide behind minions to break his cannon Q. His Shock Blast detonates on the first thing it hits. Stand behind a caster minion and the Q does nothing.

Bait his Q-E combo. The E speeds up his Q. Once he uses E, his Q is on cooldown. Walk up and trade during that window.

Trade short. Jayce wants extended pokes. Walk up, throw one or two autos, and walk away. Short trades favor you.

Punish his immobility. Jayce has one short hammer-Q jump. Once he uses it, he has no escape. Use that window to all-in.

Coordinate with your jungler. Jayce has no waveclear when behind. A single successful gank usually deletes him.

Itemization

Doran's Shield: Almost every counter starts this. Sustain against his poke is huge.

Magic Resist boots are bait. Jayce deals physical damage despite the energy effects. Plated Steelcaps reduce his auto damage.

Frozen Heart: Tanks. Armor and the attack speed slow aura cripple Jayce's auto damage.

Maw of Malmortius: Surprisingly not needed against Jayce since most damage is physical. Stick to standard bruiser items.

Tabi rush: Boots of armor for AD bruisers. Massive vs Jayce.

Anti-heal: Jayce builds Conqueror which gives him sustain in fights. Bramble or Mortal Reminder later.

Common Mistakes

Standing in lane with no minions between you and Jayce. Free Q poke for him.

Trading into his Acceleration Gate. The E speed boost means his next Q hits harder and faster. Step away when he drops the gate.

Picking ranged squishies blind. Lux and Vex melt to Jayce's burst.

Letting him roam at 6. Jayce's R gives him bonus stats in either form, making him a threat anywhere. Watch the map.

Not warding river. Jayce has decent roam timers and his Q can poke even at gank distance.

FAQ

Who is the best counter to Jayce?

Wukong in top lane. His clone dodges poke, his armor stacks reduce damage, and his ult outright kills Jayce at 6.

Why is Jayce so strong in lane?

His form swap gives him range and melee tools in one champion. Cannon poke chunks you from far. Hammer gap-close finishes you up close. Combined with a strong level 2, he wins most lanes against squishy or immobile picks.

How do I dodge his cannon Q?

Hide behind minions. The Q detonates on the first target. Caster minions block it perfectly. Position with your wave between you and Jayce at all times.

What does Jayce do badly?

Extended teamfights. Once he uses his burst, his damage drops significantly. He also has no escape, so once he is committed to a fight, he often dies.

Final Words

Jayce looks scary because he pokes from range and stuns you up close, but he is squishy and has no escape. Pick a champion with a gap-closer or a tank stat-check, hide behind minions to break his cannon Q, and call your jungler often. Do that and Jayce goes from a lane bully to a free win.
